Reactions: Mock draft

Users compare their picks to CNNSI.com's

CNNSI.com posted its 2001 Mock NFL Draft and we asked for our users' reactions to our experts' picks. A sample of the responses we received is below:

Your first five or six picks make sense, but if you think the Packers would choose Santana Moss at No. 10 as opposed to a larger, better route-running WR, a DL, or moving down and picking up an additional second or third round pick, you're out of your freaking minds. Do some research. They have plenty of speedy WRs already. What they need is a guy who can run crisp routes and catch 99 percent of the Favre lasers thrown his way.
Doug Waxon, State College, Pa.

Koren Robinson will not last that long. He will probably be picked before David Terrell, and definitely before Santana Moss. Even though they need a running back, the Bears would have to think long and hard about passing up this kid.
J. Levine, Rolling Meadows, Ill.

Listen, I hate the Chiefs, but if you think Vermeil came back to develop a QB, you are severely mistaken. Barring the fact they hold on to the pick (Trent Green rumors), K.C. will absolutely pick up a running back. Either Tomlinson or Bennett because Cleveland will take Mcallister. Bank on it!
Dan Gorwitz, Selden, N.Y.

You've made a lot of right-on-the-money calls, I believe. However, I do not think you can leave a power and speed tailback like the A-Train (Anthony Thomas, Michigan) out of the first round. If he doesn't go in Round 1 he might be the best pro back ever taken in a subsequent round. For any team looking to bolster their running game he very well likely will be an immediate impact player.
David Rizik, Scottsdale, Ariz.

I'm glad you changed your Arizona pick of D. Terrell. That would be great, but they have to many other defensive needs. But the Cards are just crazy enough to release Frank Sanders and then pick him. Boston, Moore, and Terrell would be a pretty nice trio. They won't stop anyone, but they would be fun to watch!
Jamie Craik, Phoenix, Ariz.

I disagree with the Dolphins' first pick, they need playmakers. I think they must go after a good tight end like (Todd Heap) or a good wide receiver like (Quincy Morgan). Then go after a tackle in the second or third round.
Pablo Vega, Miami, Fla.

Congratulations on being the first mock draft I have seen that recognized that the Lions need help on the OL. Every other draft has them taking a DL or a DB (and one taking a WR), when the Lions' glaring need is clearly on the offensive line. Now let's just hope Hutchinson falls that far to the Lions. He may go earlier.
Gary Bazydlo, Troy, Mich.

Though I agree Hutchinson would be a good pick, I think the Lions could trade down and get him later, plus they also could fill their CB problems. If they could pick up a first round draft pick in 2002, they could send C. Batch, their two first rounders to Houston and get a real quarterback like Drew Henson. They could let Harbaugh start till Henson is ready.
Jeffery Bernath, Waldron, Mich.

I don't understand why you have the Bears taking a running back with their pick. The Bears have a good back in Allen who put up decent numbers despite not starting the first two games. The Bears need to draft a DE to help that defense. I would like to see them draft Thomas out of Michigan in the second round. He would give the Bears a good 1-2 combination at running back.
Donny Magli, Sault Ste Marie, Ontario

I am responding to your prediction of Bennett being the first pick by the Vikings. If the Vikings do anything other than take a D-Back or a D-Lineman with that pick Dennis Green should be fired. We have a good offense even without Robert Smith and running backs are always available in the later rounds that turn out to be good. I personally predict that the Vikings will take two DBs and one DL with their first three picks because of their tremendous need in defense.
Jesse Haraldson, Apple Valley, Minn.

Do you honestly believe that the Colts would take Jamie Winborn with the 22nd pick overall? Give me a break! This guy is a second or third rounder at best. The Colts will draft a big run-stuffing defensive tackle (Marcus Stroud or Casey Hampton) or a solid cover cornerback. These are where the most pressing needs are. The guy who came up with Jamie Winborn must be getting the first round of the draft confused with the third round!
Chris Bushhorn, La Quinta, Calif.

The "draftniks" are stoned. The Vikes will not draft a running back in the first round. Sure, Mo and Doug won't break the almost routine 50-70 yard jogs like Robert, but they are better than nothing. Denny set the precedent with Talance Sawyer, Kailee Wong and Dante Culpepper, one year on the bench, next year starter. Look for Doug Chapman to be the starter next year.
Gary, Marion, Iowa

There is no way, especially with Scott Gragg and Charlie Garner being free agents, that the 49ers would pass up Kenyatta Walker for Andre Carter. If Walker lasts past the sixth pick I'd be shocked. If the Niners can't get Walker, Davis, Tomlinson, McCallister or Justin Smith they will trade the pick.
Brian LeBlanc, Sarasota, Fla.

For the Steelers, you're finally starting to make sense. Jamal Reynolds would fill a need they have to address ASAP.
Dan Finnegan, Bremerton, Wash.

I can't see Ron Wolf making a reach for Santana Moss at No. 10. This is a very deep WR class and after Terrell, a lot of the guys are pretty close in talent. I see Green Bay going defense with either Seymour or Lewis. Unless by some miracle Terrell is there at 10, Wolf will address the needs of the defensive line.

I also can't see the Chiefs taking Drew Brees. I know that the QB situation is up in the air, but Brees is not a good fit in Vermeil's scheme. Brees is a perfect fit in the West Coast Offense. I can really see Bennett going to the Chiefs at that pick.
Eddie, Jefferson, Wisc.

Drew Brees slipping to number 12 is a long shot. No way the Bengals should let him slip past the number three spot or at least be picked up by Chicago at four. Somebody is going to have a great draft if he slips that far.
William Charanza, Bryan, Texas

Yes, the Pats will need to take Leonard Davis at the No. 6 pick in the first round. They can't possibly screw this up. There are only two other players I would consider if available. David Terrell and Richard Seymour will be all-pro players in the near future. If somehow none of those guys were available, I would really look to trade down.

In the second round I was hoping Damione Lewis might still be there. But if it goes down like you have it, I'd like to see them take Cedric Scott or Casey Hampton. In the third round I'm praying Alex Bannister or Latef Grim is still around. By the way, where was Derrick Gibson in your mock draft?
Louis Bako, Waltham, Mass.

Steelers mad at Chiefs for grabbing Brees? Please! If Kordell falters, we already got a good backup, not Kent Graham, Tee Martin. Also, Arizona hasn't had the best luck concerning d-linemen (are you listening Eric Swann?) so maybe they should trade down for a quality pass rusher and draft someone to replace Jake "a snake bit my arm so I throw interceptions" Plummer.
Jason Nolan, Oakmont, Pa.

You guys have Kenyatta Walker going to the Bucs with the 21 pick. I hate to say that Buffalo would never let this pick pass them at 14. With Rob "Sack me" Johnson at QB, the Bills might as well take out a life insurance policy on Rob if they pass on a tackle of Walker's quality. Besides, Walker will be long gone by pick 14.
Matt Lockwood, Palmetto, Fla.
