Name Your Nag -- 2001 Preakness
Horse name:
Sheer Dumb Luck
Submitted by:
Cynthia Brann, Atlanta, Ga.
Because racing is full of chance happenings.

Horse name:
Stevie Ray Gaughn
Submitted by:
John Hopfinger, Columbus, Ohio
Cool musician. Cool name.

Horse name:
Woody's Horseshoe
Submitted by:
Teresa J. Halley, Dublin, Ohio
Named after Ohio State football coach, Woody Hayes, and the "horseshoe" which is the stadium in which the Buckeyes play.

Horse name:
Bensonhurst Pride
Submitted by:
Fredrick Scuteri, Brooklyn, N.Y.
I was born, raised, and still live in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn. I have seen my great neighborhood frowned upon as a kid due to a few negative situations. After finishing graduate school, and obtaining several other educational degrees, one of the old-timers told me that it was kids like me who gave Bensonhurst pride.

Horse name:
AmblerGambler
Submitted by:
Frank Gagliano, Ambler, Pa.
I am from Ambler. I'm a horse gambler. It rhymes.

Horse name:
Party With Marty
Submitted by:
Richard Luskin, Los Angeles, Calif.
A tribute to my Dad. A fun guy and a genuine example of an American success story.

Horse name:
Sweet Tea
Submitted by:
Patricia, Atlanta, Ga.
Because it's a great color for a horse and the best drink around.

Horse name:
Bread Winner
Submitted by:
Terry McKeever, Syosset, N.Y.
With the size of today's purses (think Breeders' Cup) and syndication fees, all you need is a few stakes victories and your horse would be a major bread (slang for money) winner.

Horse name:
Go for Broke
Submitted by:
Marcus Hurley, Washington, D.C.
An allusion to the high stakes world of betting on horse races.

Horse name:
Cotton is King
Submitted by:
Joseph Cortez, Merced, Calif.
One day in high school, I was leafing through a U.S. History text and was drawn to a reprint of a mid-19th century cartoon. The cartoon dealt with North-South tensions, and the South's dependend on the cotton industry. The caption read, simply, "Cotton is King." I thought, "that would be a great name for a race horse."

Horse name:
Three's Intimidation
Submitted by:
Crystal Whittaker, Coventry, R.I.
My horse is named after Dale Earnhardt affectionately known to his competitors as the Intimidator. Earnhardt drives the black #3 Winston Cup car and is a legend in and of himself. A fitting name for the right horse... black, of course.

Horse name:
Royal Appraiser
Submitted by:
Mike Sugarman, Baltimore, Md.
I am a real estate appraiser, and the profession is not as known or respected as it should be, even though the responsibility is high to protect banks, etc.

Horse name:
Zubovs Escapade
Submitted by:
Jessica Finzer, North Tonawanda, N.Y.
I always like Zubovs name from the Dallas Stars and I like the idea of the word Escapade, which means an adventure.

Horse name:
Two Minute Glory
Submitted by:
Derek Lee, Peterborough, Ontario
My name is derived from every owner, trainer, and jokey's ultimate goal: "Run the Kentucky Derby in under two minutes". This is what horse racing is all about.

Horse name:
Monday Morning Scowls
Submitted by:
Stephen Bilodeau, Amarillo, Texas
This is what my boss gives the office when the Cowboys lose, the Texas Longhorns lose and Notre Dame wins. We also call it the trifecta.

Horse name:
Complectilble
Submitted by:
Henry Lucas III, New Orleans, La.
This is a combination of the names of two horses which gave me the biggest exacta I have ever been paid on. The horses were Complicate and Collectible. Odds were 23-1 and 10-1.
